The hype of hyper-rationalization

Modern movies and the PR machines behind global startups have glorified hyper rational individuals - just look at Zuckerberg, Gates, Bezos, Musk, Vitalik or others.

They all have incredible achievements and definitely deserve credit where credit is due. I have to say stuff like this so we can have a normal conversation and calm the zealots down.

The issue is most people don’t have a system and aren’t a modern Sherlock Holmes. They have decent or above average logical abilities, but more importantly they have an amazing instinct.

Add a favorable social and geographical context to that amazing instinct + a sprinkle of good timing and you’ve got yourself a winner.

The common trait, as far as I can tell, is that they’re able to quickly summarize all the information they’re given and based on previous experience decide probabilities.

They simplify things.

Great people know stuff and can’t really explain why they know what they know.

The problem is that’s not sexy. Being a genius and not being able to explain it is not inspirational.

Is it just a combination of winning the gene lottery & growing up in a right environment for your skillset? Might be.

Do we want to accept that maybe there’s no secret formula to success? Definitely not.
